Are You Ready For Flu Season?

Here we go again… people are sneezing and coughing everywhere! The aches and pains of flu season are becoming all too real and hand sanitizer is flying off of the shelves. But other than the flu vaccine, what can you do to protect yourself and your family this year?

Staying healthy is easier than you think! By keeping a few simple rules in mind, you can ward off the flu. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind.

Make friends with fresh air. Yes, it’s getting cold outside, but braving the weather serves two important purposes to keeping you healthy during this flu season. First, getting out of centrally heated rooms takes you out of recirculating air. Think about it. If someone suffering from the flu sneezes on one side of the room, that recirculating air brings the sneeze right to you! Also, going for a walk provides you the exercise you need, which helps to produce important virus killing cells called neutrophils and monocytes.

Hurry up and relax! Stress produces cortisol, which impedes the body’s ability to produce cytokinessmall cell signaling proteins that trigger your body’s immune system. So take the time to relax this season! Take a nice long bubble bath or pick up a yoga practice.  Just make sure that you are giving yourself enough time to relax everyday.

Wash your hands! Yes, we know that keeping our hands clean is a big part of protecting yourself against the flu. But did you know that you need to rub your hands with sanitizer or soap for at least 20 seconds to kill the flu virus?

Get your zzz’s.  Anything less than 7 hours can severely dampen the immune systems ability to function. Make sure that you’re setting aside enough time to get your rest. Can that project wait until tomorrow? Do you really need to watch that rerun of Friends? I bet you could find a few things to move around in your schedule to get a full night’s sleep.
