Flu Getting You Down?

The 2012/2013 flu season has been gaining attention as people all over the country are at home with aches, pains, and sniffles. Luckily, the virus seems to be slowing its spread but there are still plenty of people that will be staying home over the next few weeks to mend their immune system.

The flu is certainly no picnic but sometimes the boredom of quarantine can be overwhelming. So why not make the best of it? Whether or not you have someone around to help you grab a tissue, there are plenty of ways to take advantage of your time off.

Rest! – You’re probably wiped out anyway, so isn’t it a good idea to let yourself rest? Sure you could probably catch up on work or do some organizing at home but what your body really wants is rest! Give your immune system a helping hand in getting those zzzzz’s.

Take a Mental Break – If you’re coping with the flu, the last thing you need is added stress. In our busy lives, it is easy to forget that our email and phones exist for our convenience. Take this time to truly take a break! Your body needs all the rest it can get to give it a chance to heal and cut the stress. Don’t worry, those emails will be waiting when you’re well.

Exercise your gray matter – Your body may not be on board but your brain could always use a workout.  If you’re feeling up to it, read a book or play a board game. If you’re worried about getting someone else sick, you can always play a game of chess online!

Laughter really is the best medicine – You may feel terrible but did you know that watching a comedy or reading a funny book could actually help you heal? There are plenty of studies out there that suggest laughing can actually boost your immune system! So go ahead, have a giggle and you could be feeling better before you know it.

Take a steam – Turn your bathroom into a steam room by running a hot shower. If you’re too lightheaded to stand, sit on a chair or the closed toilet and breathe in the steam, which moistens your nasal passages and throat and can help you relax.
